Hello all, this fall I took an interesting workshop on palette knife painting with Hamid Ayoub a well known Ottawa artist. The idea was to loosen up and work with the design elements: line, shape, space, colour, form, texture, and value. All of this creativity took place without the help of a photo. Using these elements we were encouraged to work from our imaginations to tell our story. It proved to be very challenging to work without the crutch of a photo, it forced me to think of each of the design elements instead of just copying them from a photo. I especially enjoyed mixing the paint on the canvas, how one layer went over the top of another layer and how the bottom layer peeked out from beneath.
I would recommend this to any of my painting friends it is a great way to loosen up. Your pencil is gone, your paint brush is gone, there are no reference photo's just your imagination , paint and a palette knife.
I am including 5 paintings in the order I completed them. I think you will be able to see some improvement from No. 1 to No. 5. These are not yet posted to my web site because they are not yet complete and I haven't signed them. I will have to look at them a little longer before deciding if they can be salvaged into a recognizable painting or doomed to the trash box.
Cheers,
Betty
